Yesterday was a tough one. On top of everything else going on, we lost one of my favourite goats Mia to meningeal worm. Mia contracted brain worm a few years ago, but I recognized the symptoms and treated her quickly, and with the exception of a change in her gait, she recovered fully. Meningeal, or brain worm, is a parasite that is carried by white tailed deer and it’s a common problem where they roam in large numbers. There is no good way to prevent it in goats, and it’s why I’ve started letting people hunt on our property. When the goats eat the worm it moves into the spinal cord where it causes neurological damage, including partial paralysis, and often leads to death. Once an animal is affected the first time subsequent cases are more drastic. It’s something I’m always on the lookout for, and I caught it quickly in Mia again this second time, but once she went down this time she never got back up. The sadness that comes with loving an animal is only mitigated by all the joy that animal brings while it’s alive. I’ll miss Mia a lot. She was a great mom, easy going, and she had a ton of personality. Crossing my fingers for better days ahead. #mininubiandairygoats #meningealworm #farminglife #lossishard❤️

I’ve done 8 hour mountain bike races and 24 hour adventure races, but I don’t think I’ve ever been this tired in my entire life. We’ve been hitting the ground running 1/2 hour before daybreak. We do chores at our neighbour’s farm, head home, I do the chores here while Troy goes off to work. Then I start planting and fencing ( and I don’t mean fighting with swords) . Troy gets home around 4, we head back up the road to do evening chores, back home to take Otto for a walk, then do our chores, then it’s time to make supper. If I make no sense, seem super grumpy, cry for seemingly no reason, or just stare at you and drool at any point in the next 3 weeks, please don’t take it personally. 😵‍💫 #exhaustified #farmingishard #sledgehammersareourfriends #whoamiandhowdidigethere

Early morning chores at #farm number 2. Farming is a solitary pursuit, but one that requires the help and knowledge of a village. When help is needed, it doesn’t matter how much you already have on your plate - you step up, knowing that the help will be reciprocated when you’re the one in need. Adding 40 cows and 30 sheep to the daily chores sounds like a lot, but once you get a routine down, it’s pretty slick. Plus, on mornings like this, it’s nice to be out watching the sun rise! #cattle #farmhelp #neighbourshelpingneighbours @troyturple
