Our Story

Tipsy Toad Grove Farm is a small, mixed regenerative farm in Tremont, a hamlet on the South Mountain of Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. Known locally as “the old Neily Farm”, the property was originally the site of a dairy operation owned by Ralph Neily, who farmed into his 90s.

In 2013 the farm was purchased and subdivided by a local beef farmer who retained the land adjacent to his cattle pastures, and then sold the remaining property across the road to us. That 30 acre piece of land, consisting of hay fields, pasture, orchards, mature forest,  brooks, a house and two barns, was just what we were looking for. After sitting vacant for several years, the land was overgrown, the barns and house were in desperate need of repair, and barbed wire engulfed by weeds and wild roses was the only indication of where the pastures began and ended. Years later we are still picking away, fixing fences, improving the soil, and stabilizing buildings, until we get to a point where time and money will allow us to renovate completely.

We see ourselves as stewards of this land. Our intention is to farm in a manner that protects and enriches the environment and invites biodiversity, while producing nutritious and healthy food for ourselves and members of our community. We have installed a certified kitchen on the property, allowing for production of prepared foods for markets. We’ve also added goat hiking to our repertoire as a way to share our relationship with this beautiful property and our animals, while promoting sustainable farming to a wider audience.

Sue Earle

Sue gave up a good university job to pursue a career in agriculture (with no experience, whatsoever). Her passion for food extends to issues of food sovereignty, food security, and sustainability. Sue works full time on the farm, growing, raising the beasts, and worrying about everything and anything that can go wrong.

Troy Turple

Troy is our head tractor driver, hay maker, heavy lifter, dreamer, do-er, and trail builder. He works off farm full time but spends a lot of his "free" time making things happen at Tipsy Toad. Troy is the head animal cuddler, goat hike leader, and all around "make-it-happen-now-and-figure-out-how-later" guy, which is a very good balance to Sue's overthinking.
